China were the dominant force on the second day of swimming action at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, claiming five gold medals in world record times at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

Pan Shiyun improved on his London 2012 silver medal to take top honours in the men’s 50 metres freestyle S7 with a time of 27.35sec, breaking the eight-year-old world record of Great Britain’s David Roberts.

Ukraine’s Ievgenii Bohodayko also dipped under the former world record of 27.67 from Beijing 2008, finishing second in 27.64 with 18-year-old Colombian Carlos Serrano third in 28.60.

Zou Liankang, who had broken the men’s 100m backstroke S2 world record in his heat before team-mate Liu Benying lowered it minutes later, claimed the Paralympic title in another world best time of 1:45.25.

Liu came second in 1:48.29, while Ukrainian world champion Serhii Palamarchuk took bronze in 1:49.76 for a new European record.

It was an all-Chinese podium in the men’s 100m butterfly S8 as Song Maodang broke a six-year-old world record with a time of 59.19.

Runner-up Xu Haijiao’s time of 1:00.08 saw him also finish below the previous world record mark of Australia’s Peter Leek from the 2010 World Championships, while Yang Guanglong claimed the bronze in 1:01.18.

Another Chinese podium sweep came in the men’s 50m butterfly S6 as Paralympic champion Xu Qing improved on the world record by 0.01 seconds with a time of 29.89.

World champion Zheng Tao was a close second in 29.93, while Wang Lichao was third in 30.95.

"This is the best reply to my friends and family because for a long time they have been trying to convince me not to race, to retire, but this gold shows that I was right," Xu said.

China’s final gold and world record came in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay, which was making its Paralympic debut as an event.

Xu combined with Peng Quiping, Shengnan Jiang and Huang Wenpan to clock a winning time of 2:18.03.

Hosts Brazil took silver in a new Americas record time of 2:25.45, while Ukraine were third in 2:30.66.

Closely behind China in the swimming medal’s table at the end of day two are Ukraine, who won four titles of their own.

Hennadii Boiko smashed the world record in the men’s 100m backstroke S1 with his time of 2:08.01 slicing more than 15 seconds off his own previous mark from this year’s European Open Championships.

Italy’s Francesco Bettella collected Italy’s first medal of the Paralympic Games with silver in 2:27.06, while Boiko’s team-mate Anton Kol rounded off the top three in 2:27.45.

Kateryna Istomina set a Paralympic record time of 1:09.04 on her way to gold in the women’s 100m butterfly S8.

Britain’s Stephanie Slater came second in 1:10.32, while defending champion Jessica Long of the United States was third in 1:10.53.

In an incredibly tight men’s 50m freestyle S10, Ukraine’s Maksym Krypak had to come back against a charge from Brazil’s Phelipe Rodrigues, setting a new European record of 23.33 for victory.

Rodrigues had to settle for silver in 23.56, while Krypak’s team-mate Denys Dubrov was third in 23.75.

Another world record from Beijing 2008 tumbled in the men’s 100m backstroke S11, courtesy of Ukraine’s Paralympic title holder Dmytro Zalevskyi shaving more than one second off the previous best with a time of 1:06.66.

Poland’s Wojciech Makowski and the US’s Bradley Snyder tied for silver in 1:08.28.
