Sochi 2014 gold medallist Bibian Mentel-Spee of The Netherlands continued her dominance of the women’s SB-LL2 classification as she secured her second victory of the season-opening International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Snowboard World Cup event on home snow in Landgraaf today.

Mentel-Spee, who won the snowboard cross title at the Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi two years ago, laid down the three quickest runs and clocked a fastest time of 36.12sec in the banked slalom race.

Compatriot Lisa Bunschoten, the banked slalom World Cup winner from last season, was again forced to settle for second place behind her formidable team-mate.

Joany Badenhorst of Australia rounded off the podium as she finished third.

"Last year I recovered from a lung surgery and during the season, I picked my speed up, picked my training up and was able to finish the competition season and right when I came out of the competition season, I heard the cancer had returned back again," Mentel-Spee said.

"But I had remission over summer and I was able to train and we had a couple of weeks of snow and I’m actually feeling really, really good and I’m just enjoying life and living my sport."

There was also success on day two for Matti Suur-Hamari, Mentel-Spee’s new training partner, as the athlete from Finland pipped Paralympic champion Evan Strong of the United States in a thrilling men’s banked slalom SB-LL2 competition.

Strong, who was triumphant in the opening race of the event at SnowWorld yesterday, had led after the first two runs before Suur-Hamari usurped him by the narrowest of margins in the third thanks to a time of 31.60.

It proved to be a disastrous ending for the American, whose mistake during the final run cost him the win.

Strong’s team-mate Michael Shea came home in third.

Banked slalom and snowboard cross world champion Chris Vos of The Netherlands put in another outstanding display on his way to a second victory of the two-day World Cup event.

The 18-year-old reigned supreme in the men’s SB-LL1 banked slalom, recording 36.01 on his first run to maintain his monopoly of the classification.

His victory came despite a qualification on his last attempt as Mark Mann of the United States and Reinhold Schett of Austria finished second and third respectively.

Brenna Huckaby also made it two wins from two as she clocked 37.51 in the women’s SB-LL1, which saw her overcome the challenges of France’s Cecile Hernandez-Cervellon and compatriot Nicole Roundy.
