Salvador Onate of Mexico recorded a home victory at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Jumping World Cup in León.

Onate triumphed in 83.88 seconds with one fault, followed by compatriot Arturo Parada Vallejo, who was the fastest rider of the day in 78.72 but had four faults.

Another Mexican, Juan Jose Zendejas Salgado, finished third in 79.40 with four faults.

"As soon as I walked the course, I knew there would only be maybe one or two clear rounds," Onate said.

"In the ring, I knew I had to take my time and that it would be better for me to take my time and maybe have a time fault, and I had to gamble a bit with that."

World Cup competition also took place in the French city of Bordeaux, with world number one Steve Guerdat topping the podium.

The Swiss rider was on Victorio Des Frotard in the nine-horse jump-off at Bordeaux Exhibitions Centre.

He completed the course in 30.82, with Daniel Deusser of Germany taking the runner-up spot in 31.59.

Belgium's Niels Bruynseels completed the podium in 31.71.

"He’s like a thoroughbred when you see him trotting around - you don’t expect much - but in canter as soon as you let him go he has a huge stride," Guerdat said of his horse.

"He’s feeling really good now, and this gives me the confidence to push and attack the fences even more."
