The virtual race was organised by John Willis, the founder of Power2Inspire, a charity that aims to create inclusive opportunities through sport.

Teams represented Cambridge and Oxford, in recognition of the two universities, which contest an annual Boat Race along the River Thames in London, although this year's edition of the event has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The two teams, consisted of eight rowers each, with able-bodied, disabled, lightweight and openweight participants, and collectively the teams rowed 6,838km.

Rowers competed from their respective homes using ergometers, which added the scores from each crew together to create a combined boat score.

Cambridge were the first boat to cross the virtual finish line and were declared the winner.

Once Cambridge took the lead they maintained their advantage and took the victory.

The winning Cambridge team featured Australian para rower Renae Domaschenz, double Olympic medallist Tom Ransley, Jan Helmich, Freddie Markanday, Sophie Paine, Pippa Whittaker, Miranda Clements and Ollie Parish.

The Oxford line-up consisted of three-time Olympic gold medallist Pete Reed, world champion Oliver Cook, Amelia Standing, Grace Clough, Jan Ole Ernst, Martha Birtles, Alex Bebb and Amy Hosking.

The majority of team members raced in the United Kingdom, with three participants in different countries - Ernst in Germany, Domaschenz in Australia and Paine in the Bahamas.

Both teams exceeded their fundraising target of £5,000 ($6,270/€5,570), with Oxford raising £6,170 ($7,740/€6,870) and Cambridge raising £9,435 ($11,835/€10,510).

All funds raised were donated to the charity Power2Inspire.
