Wales are Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Cup of Darts champions for the first time after Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton triumphed in Austria.

Having knocked last year's champions Scotland out of the competition yesterday, the Welsh pair beat Australia, Germany and then top seeds England to earn the the title.

Wales enjoyed a dominant three days at Salzburgarena, also boasting the best three-dart average of the competition to be good value for the world title.

They were not at their best in the quarter-finals, however, and were pushed all the way by Australian pairing Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta.

Price beat Whitlock 4-3, despite averaging less than his opponent, before Heta brushed off Clayton to take it to a doubles decider.

The Welsh then outplayed their opponents, with a three-dart average more than nine points higher to win 4-2 and advance to the final four.

England squeezed past hosts Austria, while Germany beat the Dutch despite the best efforts of world number one Michael van Gerwen, who won his solo match despite playing through a back complaint.

Belgium ended Canada's unlikely run in the other quarter-final.

Wales beat Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals and then breezed past England in the best-of-five final, winning 3-0 with an excellent 101.30 average.

Michael Smith won only one leg versus Price and Rob Cross two versus Clayton as the top seeds were thoroughly outplayed.

Wales are the third nation to win the PDC's marquee international tournament in the past three years, and the fourth overall.
