Austrian standing skier Markus Salcher celebrated his first downhill victory in three years as he returned to the top of the podium at his home World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup in Saalbach.

The double Paralympic champion finished in 1min 11.17sec to beat Frenchman Arthur Bauchet by just 0.15 while Russian Aleksei Bugaev was 1.12 further back in third.

"For me it’s a tremendous success today because it’s my first downhill win in three years," said Salcher.

"It’s cool that I’m on top of the podium again."

A mere 0.13 had kept Salcher off the podium in the opening men’s standing downhill race of the day as he finished in fourth place.

Theo Gmur of Switzerland was the winner in 1.11.33 ahead of Bauchet in 1.11.91 and Bugaev in 1.12.00.

"I was more concentrated in the turns in the down part of the track in the second race than in the first race," Salcher said.

"The light was not that strong in the second race and also the slope, it was soft and bumpy, and maybe I was better prepared for those conditions than the others.

"After the first run I was not that happy about that result, but in the end it was a good day."

Gmur and Salcher’s victories in the men’s standing class broke Bauchet’s undefeated streak at this season’s World Cup as he had to settle for two silver medals.

Russia’s Varvara Voronchikhina completed a downhill double gold in the women’s standing races.

She beat eight-time Paralympic champion Marie Bochet on both occasions, winning by 0.72 seconds in the first race and just 0.03 seconds in the second downhill contest.

Switzerland’s Bigna Schmidt was third in both races.

French skier Hyacinthe Deleplace clinched the leader’s bib in the men’s vision impaired class after back-to-back downhill wins.

Deleplace and his guide Maxime Jourdan achieved a best-ever result at a World Cup as they twice got the better of Slovakia’s Jakub Krako and guide Branislav Brozman who earned silver in downhill at Pyeongchang 2018.

The French duo won by 0.75 in the first race before increasing the winning margin to 0.91 in the second.

Italian downhill world champion Giacomo Bertagnolli and his guide Andrea Ravelli tied for second in the first race and took a bronze in the second.

Slovakian vision impaired skier Henrieta Farkasova won two golds in the women’s races with the help of her new guide Michal Cerven after registering winning times of 1:18.98 and 1:17.48.

Her teammate Alexandra Rexova, the only other contestant, collected two silvers, finishing 2.70 adrift in the first race and 3.41 in the second.

Norwegian sitting skier Jesper Pedersen extended his winning streak from the earlier slalom races held in Veysonnaz in Switzerland as he grabbed double downhill gold.

Pedersen clocked times of 1:14.28 and 1:13.27 to see off Switzerland’s Pascal Christen who bagged two silvers, while Japan’s Akira Kano picked himself up after failing to finish the first race to win bronze in the second.

The speed races are due to continue in Saalbach tomorrow with the super-G.
