Volunteers for the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Chengdu 2021 World University Games are participating in their first event in their roles at the National Games tennis qualifiers at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre.

Starting on Friday (April 23) and running until Thursday (April 29), the qualifiers were held jointly by the Tennis Administrative Center of the General Administration of Sport of China and the Chengdu 2021 Executive Committee.

These matches are the first part of a series of sports events named "Rendezvous with Happiness in Chengdu", which will feature the volunteers.

A total of 161 volunteers from universities and colleges in Chengdu were in attendance to support the event.

Sichuan International Tennis Centre is one of the venues for tennis at the World University Games.

Before the event, the Chengdu 2021 Department of Volunteers conducted special training for volunteers on general skills, etiquette and emergency handling. 

In advance, all volunteers visited the venue to learn of their job responsibilities and work procedures to improve their skills beforehand.

During this event, volunteers will provide services including sign-in, security, marshalling, information technology and doping testing.

A total of 423 athletes from 24 teams are set to participate in the event in men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.

Off the court Chengdu 2021 merchandise, including a figure of the mascot Rongbao playing tennis, will be on sale.

The "Rendezvous with Happiness in Chengdu" series has 18 sports including archery, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, diving, fencing, tennis, water polo, judo, shooting, athletics, volleyball, badminton and basketball.

Swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, wushu and rowing will also feature.

These events are scheduled to be held between April and June at the Chengdu 2021 venues.

During this series, nearly 5,000 volunteers from Sichuan University, the University of Electronic Services and Technology of China will participate as volunteers.

Chengdu 2021 was scheduled to take place in August 2021, but was postponed by two weeks to avoid a clash with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to coronavirus, the Summer World University Games was further postponed to 2022.
