Two fencers from Uzbekistan and two from Singapore have booked places at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by winning an Asia-Oceania qualification tournament in Tashkent.

Meanwhile the six athletes to earn Olympic berths at the Pan American qualifier in Costa Rican capital San Jose represent six different countries.

In Uzbekistan, home fencers Sherzod Mamutov and Zaynab Dayibekova won the men's and women's sabre competitions respectively to earn their places at the Games.

Venezuelan Jose Quintero won a tight final against Argentina’s Pascual Maria Di Tella 15-14 to triumph in the Pan American event and join Mamutov in the Tokyo 2020 men's sabre draw.

Maria Belen Perez Maurice of Argentina earned the women's sabre title in San Jose.

Kyrgyzstan's Roman Petrov beat Vietnam's Tien Nhat Nguyen for the Asia-Oceania men's épée spot, while Canadian Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger defeated Cuba's Yunior Reytor Venet to earn the Pan American equivalent.

Kiria Tikanah Abdul Rahman was one of two Singaporean fencers to qualify for the Games and did so in the women's épée, where Maria Luisa Doig Calderon of Peru will join her in the Olympic draw.

Calderon beat the Canadian Leonora Mackinnon 15-12 in the Pan American final.

Singapore's Amita Berthier and Chile's Katina Proestakis earned Olympic berths in the women's foil, while Asian Games champion Huang Mengkai of China and Mexican Diego Cervantes won their respective men's foil qualifiers.

The Tokyo 2020 fencing competition is due to begin on July 24, the day after the Olympic Opening Ceremony.
