El Salvador has been chosen to host the World Surfing Games again in 2023, with the International Surfing Association (ISA) taking its flagship event back to Surf City following a successful staging earlier this year.

The 2023 World Surfing Games will act as a primary qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics - where surfing will be held in Tahiti - subject to approval by the International Olympic Committee.

As part of the agreement between the ISA and El Salvador's Government to continue to bring major events to the country, the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship is planned to be held at El Sunzal and La Bocana waves in 2022.

The 2021 World Surfing Games came to a close on June 6 after being postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with 51 nations competing.

"We have found amazing partners in El Salvador for the long-term benefit of surfing," said ISA President Fernando Aguerre.

"I would especially like to thank President [Nayib] Bukele and Minister [of Tourism] Morena Valdez for their very strong commitment to the success of these World Surfing Games, and their belief in the ISA and our mission.

"What they have managed to achieve here in these last days is nothing short of remarkable and for this, we are grateful and eager to continue to expand and strengthen this partnership.

"Just like the hundred of surfers from around the world who came here and experienced El Salvador's beautiful country and warm hospitality, we look forward to continuing to return here in the interest of making a better world through surfing."

Surfing is due to make its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

The final places in the competition were secured at this year's World Surfing Games.
