Rehm triumphed in the men's T64 long jump at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, having earned long jump golds in the T42/44 and T44 at the previous two editions.

He also contributed to a German 4x100 metre T42-47 relay success at Rio 2016 and has won a long jump gold at the last five editions of the World Championships.

Rehm has also competed in able-bodied athletics at international level, winning gold in the long jump at the 2016 Indoor Grand Prix in Glasgow.

He had hoped to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games but was unable to prove that his running blades would not give him an advantage and saw a bid to feature at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics rejected by World Athletics, which was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In the long jump T64 at the European Championships in Bydgoszcz in June, Rehm set a new world record of 8.62m, followed by an 8.18m jump at the Paralympics.

The Greek Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou clinched gold at the Japan National Stadium with 8.41m.

Rehm has said he hopes Olympians and Paralympians will be able to compete together in more competitions.

"If you're clever, you can really market it together," Rehm suggested in an interview with Sport1, as per Süddeutsche Zeitung.

"I say: let's get together: the Olympic and Paralympic winners meet for a battle a few times a year."

Prosthetics and whether or not they bring a competitive advantage has been a notable talking point in many Para athletes' bids to compete in able-bodied events.

Rehm believes some athletes have an "ego problem."

"That's why my offer is valid: let's evaluate separately, then I won't take anything away from anyone," he said.

"That's an ego problem for a few athletes.

"That they don't feel like losing against me or jumping shorter."

However, he made clear that he still holds personal ambitions of competing in able-bodied long jump events.

"There is still the World Championship next year," Rehm commented.

"That would be a cool option where I could start.

"I will definitely start talking.

"The goal remains to contest more joint competitions in the long term."

The 33-year-old has previously made calls "to connect" the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and wants to compete in the former in order to "promote the Paralympic Games."

Australia's Melissa Tapper competed in the table tennis and Para table tennis competitions at Rio 2016 and Iran's Zahra Nemati did likewise in archery and Para archery.

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius became the first amputee sprinter to compete at an Olympic Games at London 2012 but he is now serving a jail sentence for murder.
