The World Games is set to be the second major international multi-sports event to be staged by Chengdu.

It is already hosting the 2021 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games, an event postponed until June 26 to July 7 next year due to the coronavirus crisis.

Chengdu is the fifth most populous city in China, with a population of more than 10 million, but is best known as a major breeding centre for pandas at Dujiangyan, an ancient irrigation system designated as a World Heritage Site.

The World Games were set up in 1981 to help promote sports and disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games.

They were first held in Santa Clara, and this will be only the second time they have taken place in Asia having been held in Kaohsiung in Chinese Taipei in 2009.

They were last held in 2017 when they were staged in Wroclaw in Poland.
