Top seed Karolina Plíšková and defending champion Bianca Andreescu both suffered third-round exits at the Indian Wells Masters in California, stopping the two from meeting each other in the fourth round.

Czech Plíšková was knocked out by Brazilian world number 116 and lucky loser Beatriz Haddad Maia, who was given a second life following a defeat in qualifying.

Maia's beat Plíšková in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, but the competitive match lasted more than two hours.

She meets Estonian 18th seed Anett Kontaveit in the next round, after Kontaveit defeated Canada's Andreescu 7-5, 6-3.

Andreescu was the defending champion from 2019, when she beat Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the final to become the first wildcard entry to win the women's singles tournament.

Now 21, Andreescu also won the US Open in 2019 but has since been hampered by injuries.

Australia's Ajla Tomljanović remains in the competition after beating Slovenian Tamara Zidanšek, and has set up a meeting with 10th seed Kerber who won 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 against Russia's Daria Kasatkina.

The Czech Republic's hopes of a title win now lie with Barbora Krejčíková who won 6-2, 6-3 against American Amanda Anisimova. 

The third seed set up a fourth-round tie with Spaniard Paula Badosa, who knocked out American 15th seed Coco Gauff 6-2, 6-2.

Tunisian 12th seed Ons Jabeur is through too, easily beating Danielle Collins of the US 6-1, 6-3. 

Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya defeated fellow unseeded player Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, and will play Jabeur next.

In the men's singles, Russian US Open champion Daniil Medvedev was held to a tight second set, but got the job done against Serbian Filip Krajinović, beating him 6-2, 7-6.

Bulgarian 23rd seed Grigor Dimitrov is top seed Medvedev's fourth-round opponent after winning 6-3, 6-4 against Reilly Opelka of the United States.

Two top-10 seeds were eliminated - Russian fourth seed Andrey Rublev and Canadian ninth seed Denis Shapovalov.

Shapovalov lost 7-6, 6-2 to Russian Aslan Karatsev, and Polish eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz - who won 6-3, 6-2 over American Frances Tiafoe - is up next for Karatsev.

Rublev who lost 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to unseeded American Tommy Paul.

Britain's Cameron Norrie, who took three sets to defeat Spanish 15th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, will play Paul in the round of 16.

Argentina's 11th seed Diego Schwartzman came from a set down to beat British 18th seed Dan Evans 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, setting up a last-16 match with Norwegian sixth seed Casper Ruud, who won 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 against South African Lloyd Harris.
