Greek city Thessaloniki is gearing up to host the World Youth and Junior Sambo Championships, which begin tomorrow and are set to run until October 17.

The event will feature competitions in eight different men's and women's youth weight categories, and seven classes for junior men and women.

Prior to a new ruling which was introduced in January, competitors were split into 10 weight categories.

To be eligible for the junior divisions athletes must be between 18 and 20, while youth fighters must be 16 to 18 years of age.

"It is not the first time that Thessaloniki has hosted an international sambo tournament of such a high level," recalled International Sambo Federation President Vasily Shestakov.

"Earlier in 2013, we already managed to successfully host the World Youth and Junior Championships in this Greek city.

"Due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, this time not all countries will be able to send their athletes to compete, but I am sure this will not affect the quality and entertainment of the fights.

"Growing up, but already experienced sambists will be able to prove themselves, demonstrate their technical skills, fortitude and will to win.

It is expected that athletes from 26 countries will participate.

Athletes will have to take regular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and comply with strict COVID-19 countermeasures in Greece.

Youth women's under-47-kilogam, 50kg and 54kg competition will be held tomorrow, along with youth men's 53kg, 58kg and 64kg.

Junior women's 80kg and over-80kg - plus junior men's 98kg and over-98kg contests - are also on the schedule.
