The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) has announced it will hold a regular season game in Dubai in December.

According to Russia's official state news agency TASS, the match will be staged in the country after the KHL and Avangard Omsk signed an agreement with authorities in Dubai.

It forms part of the KHL World Games series.

Avangard Omsk are due to face AK Bars in the game in Dubai, the latest KHL contest to be staged outside of the home countries of its participating teams.

The KHL, the premier professional ice hockey league in Europe and Asia and considered the second strongest in the world behind the National Hockey League, predominantly has members in Russia but also has teams based in Belarus, China, Finland, Latvia and Kazakhstan.

KHL matches have been held in Vienna, Zurich and Davos in recent years.

There were also plans for Israel to stage a KHL game before it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I am glad that this year we will be able to continue the tradition of holding these games," said KHL President Alexei Morozov.

"Dubai will host this match this year.

"We want to introduce a new audience to our wonderful game so that people are interested in it."

Avangard Omsk are second in the Chernyshev Division of the Eastern Conference, while AK Bars are third in the Kharlamov Division.
