Gonzales, who captured gold at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, was charged with one count each of a lewd act on a child under 15 and a lewd act on a child aged 14 or 15.

The 57-year-old appeared at LA County Superior Court on Tuesday (October 19) where he pleaded no contest to both charges, according to Deputy District Attorney Paul Thompson.

The grandmother of one of the victims, who is now 17, said she was unhappy at the ruling as Gonzales could have faced 18 years in prison, only for it to be cut in a plea deal.

"It's not fair. She's a child and he did this to her," said the grandmother in a report by ABC 7.

"He's going to do three years, come out and act like nothing happened?

"No it's not fair."

Gonzales worked as a youth boxing coach at the Eddie Heredia Boxing Club, which is operated by the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department.

He was arrested in December 2017 after a report made by a family member of the female student, and charged in January 2018 with lewd acts with a 13-year-old.

Another case was filed earlier this year involving a 14-year-old girl.

During his boxing career, Gonzales won a gold medal in the under-48 kilograms light flyweight division at his home Games.

He beat South Korea's world ranked number two Kwang Sun Kim in his opening contest, and Jose Marcelino Bolivar of Venezuela in the semi-finals.

Gonzales then received a walkover in the final when Italian opponent Salvatore Todisco could not appear due to a broken thumb.

The boxer also won a silver medal at the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas.
