Brazil and the United States racked up 25 medals between them as they dominated the Pan American Karate Championships in Punta del Este in Uruguay.

Two of Brazil’s four gold medals came on the final day as the men’s and women’s kumite teams defeated the US and Venezuela respectively.

The golden double saw Brazil finish the three-day tournament at the top of the medal table after Douglas Brose struck gold in the men’s kumite under-60 kilogram and Vinicius Figueira triumphed in the men’s kumite under-67kg in an impressive weekend for the South American nation.

Brazil also came away with six silvers and three bronzes to finish ahead of the US, which won four golds, four silvers and four bronzes.

US stars Sakura Kokumai and Ariel Torres prevailed on the opening day of the competition, with the latter adding the continental crown to his Olympic bronze medal.

Torres then claimed his second consecutive continental title courtesy of a hard-fought victory over team-mate Gakuji Tozaki in the men’s kata.
