Weikert is one of three candidates proposed for the DOSB Presidency, after Alfons Hörmann announced in May he would resign from the role at the end of the year following allegations over the organisation’s culture.

Claudia Bokel, President of the German Fencing Federation, and Stephan Mayer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community, have also been proposed for the position.

Weikert, the outgoing International Table Tennis Federation President, was asked about the potential for a German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games should he be elected President.

The official refused to rule out a potential bid for the Games in 2036, which would fall on the centenary of the Belin 1936 Olympic Games held under the Nazi regime.

"We have to apply as soon as possible, also for 2036," Weikert told Sportschau.de in an interview.

"I know that there are discussions about whether to apply for 2036 against the background of Berlin 1936.

"But I am of the opinion: yes.

"You have to portray the image of Germans well and work precisely to ensure that we portray ourselves well abroad.

"The answer is clear: Paralympic Games, Olympic Games should come to Germany as soon as possible."

Weikert suggested there may be other cities to Berlin that could be in contention to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games should a bid come to fruition.

A privately funded Rhine-Ruhr bid had sought to bring the Games to Germany in 2032.

The effort was ended earlier this year when Brisbane was installed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the preferred bidder for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.

The Australian city was later rubber-stamped as the host city in July.

Hörmann had been among German officials to express surprise by the announcement of Brisbane as the preferred candidate, although then IOC’s Future Host Commission chair Kristin Kloster Aasen hit back by suggesting the DOSB had been informed of changes to the process.

North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet had suggested he would support a German bid in 2036.

A series of bids for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been mooted.

Budapest, Indonesia and Qatar could also follow up their interest in staging the Games, despite disappointment at missing out in the process for 2032.

Additionally, India, Russia and Turkey have been suggested as potential contenders.

Sadiq Khan had also mooted an Olympic and Paralympic bid during his successful re-election campaign as London Mayor.

Under the IOC’s reformed bidding process, interested parties can join a continuous dialogue phase with the organisation.

The continuous dialogue phase is non-committal.

The IOC can then enter into a targeted dialogue, where the organisation has identified a preferred host for the Games.
