David Smith received an Honour for Excellence at the Boccia UK awards following his Paralympic Games gold medal at Tokyo 2020.

Smith beat Scott McCowan to the award after achieving gold in the BC1 category in Tokyo, a repeat of his gold from Rio 2016.

"Tokyo feels like a long time ago now but it was the perfect Games for me," he said in the online ceremony.

"The support I had from the squad - the staff and the athletes - totally made my experience.

"Everyone in the team had an impact on me and I could feel you over my shoulder when I was playing and being able to play, full throttle, with no fear was incredible.

"It’s got me really excited for the future."

Athletes and support staff voted for winners in four other categories.

The teamwork category was won by Andrew Evans, Boccia UK’s performance psychologist, for bringing teams together.

The commitment award was handed to coach Glynn Tromans, while performance analyst Anna Knowles received the fun award.

The final award for passion was given to squad newcomer Will Arnott.

Helen Nicholls, Boccia UK’s performance director, said: "Twenty twenty one was a year of adversity.

"As an athlete, 90 per cent of your days are not on a podium.

"But they are about being strong and resilient to whatever comes your way.

"I’m really proud of the whole squad and we look forward to 2022."
