The first event of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix season is set to begin in Dubai tomorrow, with just under 450 athletes from 43 countries set to participate in competition at the Dubai Club for People with Determination.

Action is scheduled to take place over four days, with athletes targeting minimum qualification standards for both the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games.

A fifty strong United Arab Emirates team is set to participate in the event, including Mohamed Hammadi, a T34 wheelchair athlete, who has won five Paralympic medals across three editions of the Games.

Hammadi is expected to compete in the men’s 800 metres and is likely to face competition from Tunisian Walid Ktila, a four-time Paralympic champion.

Switzerland’s Marcel Hug, known as the Silver Bullet, is expected to be one of the big international names competing in the field, with the 12-time Paralympic medallist set to contest both the men’s 1500 metres and 5,000 metres in the T54 category.

Hug won four golds in the T54 category at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, with his victories coming in the marathon, 800m, 1500m and 5,000m.

Previewing the competition in Dubai, event chairman Thani Juma Berregad said: "The Fazza Para Athletics Championship has been an important event in our calendar.

"The event has grown over the years with Paralympic and world champions now being a regular in the line-up.

"This event was also the stepping stone towards hosting a successful World Para Athletics Championships in 2019.

"I hope the event continues to produce many more Paralympic champions. My best wishes to the participating athletes."

Last year’s event saw four world records set - including in the women’s 100m T63 by Italian Ambra Sabatini, who went on to claim gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
