Mexico romped to a memorable victory at the North and Central America and Caribbean division of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Jumping Nations Cup series in Coapexpan with a phenomenal double clear from Patricio Pasquel.

The home squad established a three-rail lead in the first round with a zero score from Federico Fernandez riding Romeo, Patricio Pasquel on Babel and Manuel Gonzalez Dufrane with his mare Hortensia van de Leeuwerk.

During the second round, Canada's Jacqueline Steffens jumped clear round to add some pressure on her opponents as both Nicolas Pizarro on Pia Contra and Fernandez recorded eight faults over the course.

Pasquel and his homebred Babel managed to finish both the first and second round with no jumping or time faults in a time of 75.92sec and 76.64sec, respectively.

The 15-year-old gelding has a total of 216 starts and 18 wins since 2010.

The American squad suffered a shock defeat earlier in round one leaving Mexico and Canada on the first two steps of the podium.

Mexico finished with two rails in hand and a final score of 12, while Canada finished second on 20.

"I'm just very grateful to my fellow riders for giving me this amazing gift to win a Nations Cup in our hometown because that's the best feeling ever," Fernandez said.

Mexico has now been qualified for the FEI Jumping Nations Cup Finals, scheduled to be held in Barcelona from September 29 to October 2.

Mexico's Canadian-born Chef d'Equipe Mark Laskin was proud of his new team's performance.

"I've been very impressed with the Mexican riders," Laskin, who resigned as Canada's Chef d'Equipe last year following a contract dispute, said.

"I have a lot of depth and a lot of riders for us to select from.

"Obviously, my idea was to really start things off with a bang, and I think we accomplished that."

Mexico has previously earned the series title when the competition took first place back in 2019.

The North and Central America and Caribbean division of the FEI Jumping Nations Cup is scheduled to continue in Vancouver on June 5 this year.
