The year of 2021 saw the International Federation Sports Climbing (IFSC) experience an online boom as coverage increased in the wake of their Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, according to the federation’s annual report.

The report was officially published at the 18th General Assembly.

Users visiting the IFSC website increased by 133 per cent to reach 500,000 while page views hit over 3 million, a rise of 153 per cent in comparison to the previous year.

The impact of the Olympics could be seen through the news item "Where to watch sport climbing at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020" which reached 180,000 views - the most of the 189 news articles they published.

Across social media channels, their audience increased across the board.

Compared to 2020 when the channel was launched, Chinese social media network Douyin saw the largest jump for it to become their largest platform for the IFSC with followers increasing by 139,000 to 280,000.

Using the same timeframe, the IFSC's YouTube was pushed to second after curating 40,604 more followers to rise to 220,786.

Instagram is third thanks to 31,381 joining the community to ensure the number of followers reached 191,154.

Meanwhile, Facebook followers increased by 17,332 to 119,306.

Twitter grew by 4,882 to hit 32,416 and Chinese social media channel Webio rose by 23,240 to have 31,000 followers overall.

Douyin enjoyed 310m total views whereas Weibo has 15m and YouTube 11m.

During the same time, the IFSC’s pool of broadcast partners increased to almost 30 thanks to agreements with BT Sport, Extreme Sports, For The Fans Sports, RAI Sport, Sport5 and Zhibo.tv to increase the worldwide viewership of sport climbing.

BT Sport agreed to show live coverage of four IFSC competitions during the season while a three-year deal was agreed with global broadcaster Extreme Sports, which can be viewed in Russia, Africa, Europe and the United States.

For The Fans Sports was also enabled to air IFSC competitions in the United States, as well as Canada.

RAI Sport, Israel's largest sports media outlet, were permitted to show monthly highlight programmes and all IFSC World Cup and World Championships competition in 2021 on a live and delayed-as-live basis.

Israeli sports channel Sport5 also showed coverage of all World Cup and World Championship competitions after securing television rights and non-exclusive mobile and simulcasts in the country.

Chinese sports streaming platform Zhibo.tv acquired exclusive digital rights to broadcast all IFSC competition on a live or delayed basis.

The deal also included non-exclusive rights for the 2021 World Championships and the IFSC events in China.

The contract with Zhibo.tv will also run through 2022.
