Sweden's Tove Ericsson upgraded her cross-country skiing silver in the girls' 7.5 kilometres freestyle to a gold in the sprint at the Winter European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) here.

Ericsson finished second to compatriot Lisa Eriksson on Monday (March 21) across the longer distance, and went one better in the 1.1km race at the Vuokatti Sport Biathlon Stadium.

She triumphed by a narrow 0.06sec margin over fellow Swedish skier Elin Näslund in the final with a winning time of 2min 17.01sec.

Iris Pinter of Italy was only 0.14 off the pace in third place, with her compatriot Nadine Laurent almost two seconds further back in 2:19.12.

Ericsson had progressed in second through her quarter-final heat, finishing behind compatriot Erica Laven, before winning her semi-final.

In the men's sprint, Lauris Kaparkalējs won Latvia's first medal of the Festival, and it was a gold as his 2:00.03 effort in the final was 0.40 quicker than Finnish home favourite Ike Melnits.

Ludvig Berg of Sweden came through in third in 2:01.09, with fellow countryman Elias Danielsson having to settle fourth in 2:01.78.

Kaparkalējs had won his quarter-final earlier in the day, but only progressed through the semi-final in third - 0.62 behind Berg and 0.15 adrift of Germany's Luca Wehrle.

Cross-country skiing competition at the Winter EYOF is set to conclude on the final day of the multi-sport event tomorrow with the 4x5km mixed relay in the classic and freestyle disciplines.
