Scottie Scheffler of the United States has become the new men’s world number one after winning the World Golf Championships (WGC)-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas.

The 25-year-old defeated Kevin Kisner in an all-American final at the Austin Country Club to secure his third Professional Golf Association title in his past five events.

His hat-trick of victories in the past six weeks has seen him climb to the top of the world rankings, replacing Spain’s Jon Rahm.

"I really don't know what to say," said Scheffler who lost to fellow American Billy Horschel in last year’s final.

"I'm just really pleased.

"It's a tough week, a long week.

"I figured out my routine to keep some energy, but I'm pretty worn out right now to be honest.

"It's a dream come true to play in front of my hometown fans here, going to school here.

"I have some good memories on this golf course, coming out to watch this tournament.

"I'm pleased to be playing in it, and even more happy to win it."

Scheffler started the day with a 3 and 1 victory over former world number one Dustin Johnson of the US and continued his flying form in the final.

Kisner, who beat Canada’s Corey Conners in the semi-finals, found himself three down after the first six holes as Scheffler got off a superb start.

They halved the next seven holes as Scheffler remained in control to beat Kisner by 4 and 3.

"He's playing incredible golf," Kisner said.

"I couldn't get the putter to cooperate."
