Para triathletes in the United States are to receive equal funding in a move which USA Triathlon believes will "further professionalise the sport of Para triathlon."

Each member of the elite Para triathlon national squad will receive "direct athlete support stipends" equal to their triathlon counterparts.

"Competing at the elite level in Para triathlon is a big financial commitment," said USA Triathlon Paralympic programme director Amanda Duke Boulet.

"Athletes are paying for equipment, travel, coaching, sports medicine, prosthetics and more.

"We are proud to offer equal funding for our elite Para triathlon national team and a prize purse at Para triathlon nationals will help provide increased exposure and promotion for U.S. athletes."

A $36,750 (£28,096/€33,640) total purse will be offered for those who win medals at the Para triathlon National Championships.

This will be supplied in equal amounts by USA Triathlon, Toyota and the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).

The prize purse will be distributed to the medallists in each event.

The National Championships are due to be held on Sunday July 17, in Long Beach, California, an event scheduled to coincide with the Toyota Legacy Triathlon.

The race is due to take place at Alamitos Beach, the proposed site for triathlon for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.

USA Triathlon also revealed the five events which will comprise the 2022 development race series, a set of races for emerging Para triathletes who aspire to compete at a future Paralympic Games.

Participants will be able to gain experience racing at the national level, with those producing strong performances considered for places in the national Para triathlon development team.

They will also be able to earn Para triathlon licenses for participation in elite competition.

"We’re also proud to work with leading Para triathlon race directors, coaches and clubs to host these races and clinics as part of the 2022 Para triathlon Development Race Series," Boulet insisted.

"We look forward to connecting with new Para triathletes and identifying the next Paralympians."

The series is due to begin with the "Ron Jon Cocoa Beach Triathlon" on Sunday (April 10).

It is set to include Leon’s Triathlon on June 5 in Hammond, Indiana which also serves as the national military and first aid responders triathlon championships featuring specific award categories for Para triathlon military and Para triathlon first responders.

The series concludes with the National Championships in July.

"The participants competing in this championship have worked hard to reach their goal of becoming elite athletes, and with Toyota’s commitment to inclusivity through mobility, we feel it’s vital that these athletes are recognised for their accomplishments," said Toyota Motor North America’s group manager Dedra de Lilli.

"Sports are the platform for people to live their best life and CAF is committed to providing access and opportunities in athletics," said Bob Babbitt, CAF's co-founder.

"Our strong partnership with USA Triathlon and Toyota will allow athletes to get the support and recognition they deserve to further grow the sport of Para triathlon."
