Japan’s Tomoa Narasaki claimed the first men’s title of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Boulder World Cup season in Meiringen.

Narasaki impressed in the early stages of competition in Switzerland, leading his qualification group yesterday and ending second in the semi-final stage behind team-mate Fujii Kokoro.

The final saw Narasaki complete the first problem in under 60 seconds, but the Olympian struggled on the next two boulders.

He began the fourth boulder in fourth place, but achieved his second top of the competition to emerge as the winner.

"I feel that the energy of the audience generated my power and finally I could reach the top," said Narasaki, a two-time overall bouldering World Cup champion.

"That was an amazing moment for me.

"The target for this season is quite obvious for me - to be a third time overall [Boulder] champion.

"I found today that the style of boulder route setting seems to be more dynamic, so maybe I need to make some adjustments for the coming competitions."

The top-four finishes each achieved two tops and three zones, with the result determined due to the number of attempts taken.

Ogata Yoshiyuki finished as the runner-up to complete a Japanese one-two.

France’s Meidi Schalck completed the podium places, with the 17-year-old ending ahead of France’s Paul Jenft.

The United States' Colin Duffy finished in fifth place, with Kokoro ending sixth.

The IFSC awarded the overall men’s Boulder World Cup titles for the 2021 season at the conclusion of the event.

Yoshiyuki ended last season with a total of 255 points, with Kokoro second on the same tally.

The Czech Republic’s Adam Ondra finished third on 200 points.
