Frenchman Yannick Borel and Choi In-jeong of South Korea secured gold medals at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Grand Prix in Cairo.

Borel upset the odds by going all the way, having been seeded 11th going into the men's épée main draw.

The Guadeloupean dominated France team-mate Nelson Lopez-Pourtier 15-5 in the final after upsetting Tokyo 2020 individual silver medallist Gergely Siklósi of Hungary in the semi-finals.

Olympic team champion Borel also defeated Moroccan Houssam Elkord, Gabriel Bonferroni of Switzerland, the United States' Yeisser Ramirez and Hungarian Tibor Andrasfi en route to the final.

France' Tokyo 2020 champion Romain Cannone had been tipped to go all the way but suffered a shock defeat to 32nd seed Mohamed Yasseen of Egypt.

Choi was involved in a brilliant women's final which she eventually won 15-14 against France's Auriane Mallo.

Double Olympic team silver medallist Choi was expected to do well in the tournament after being seeded second, while Mallo notably knocked out compatriot Marie-Florence Candassamy, who is fourth in the women's épée world rankings.

Italy's Rossella Fiamingo, Nelli Differt of Estonia, Romanian Greta Veres and Switzerland's Fiona Hatz all lost to Choi as she steamrolled her way through the competition.

The next FIE Grand Prix is set to take place in Incheon in South Korea from May 13 to 15, with foil competition planned.
