Men’s world number one Paul Coll continued his strong start to the event at the Club S Allegria, winning his second successive match in straight games.

The New Zealand star overcame India’s Mahesh Mangaonkar 11-5, 11-3, 11-9 to book his place in the third round.

Coll’s bid for a maiden world title will continue against Egypt’s Mazen Hesham, who was an 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 winner against compatriot Karim El Hammamy in the second round.

Sixth seed Tarek Momen, who beat Coll in the 2020 final, dropped one game in his second round contest.

The Egyptian star earned an 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8 win over the United States’ Faraz Khan.

His reward is a meeting with Wales’ Joel Makin, who beat France’s Lucas Serme 11-8, 11-3, 11-6.

Karim Abdel Gawad, who won the men’s title the last time Cairo hosted the World Championships in 2016, also advanced.

The 12^th seed beat France’s Victor Crouin 11-9, 11-5, 11-8.

He will now play 2017 champion Mohamed ElShorbagy of Egypt. who beat Colombia’s Juan Camilo Vargas 11-6, 11-4, 11-5.

Women’s top seed Nouran Gohar continued her pursuit of a maiden world title by beating compatriot Farida Mohamed 11-4, 11-2, 11-4.

The 2021 runner-up will now face Tesni Evans of Wales, after her second round opponent Coline Aumard of France was forced to retire when trailing 12-10, 11-2.

New Zealand’s Joelle King, the fifth seed, booked her place in the third round with an 11-3, 11-5, 11-9 win over Egypt’s Yathreb Adel.

King will face further Egyptian opposition in Nada Abbas.

Abbas advanced after the United States’ Olivia Clyne retired from their match after the first game.

Second round matches will continue tomorrow in Cairo.
