The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has approved the triathlon qualification system for Paris 2024, with 120 places on the line.

There are to be 11 triathlon medal events at the next edition of the Paralympics Games, with the qualifying period for these scheduled for a window between July 1 2023 and July 1 2024.

World Triathlon added that results from its Continental Championships could be included from before this period in exceptional circumstances, but not after July 1 2024.

"The approval by the IPC of the proposed qualification criteria is a great step forward to ensure participation of all the sport classes at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games," said World Triathlon President Marisol Casado.

"With an athlete quota of 120, we can ensure that all Para triathletes around the world will have the chance to qualify for the Paralympics and represent our sport at the most important event in their careers.

"After the great success we've had in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, this criteria offers our sport an opportunity to consolidate its presence at the Games and continue growing worldwide."

At Paris 2024, medals are to be awarded for men and women in the PTWC, PTVI, PTS2, PTS4 and PTS5 categories, while medals are also to be awarded to men in the PTS3 competition.

For all medal events, except the women's PTS4, the nine top-ranked athletes on the World Triathlon Paralympic Qualification Ranking as of July 1 2024 will earn their nation a quota spot.

There are a maximum of two spots available per National Paralympic Committee (NPC).

For the women's PTS4, the top nine PTS4 athletes qualify under the same rules as the other categories, but the top five PTS3 athletes also qualify, with a maximum of one per country.

Another sixteen eligible athletes are then to be selected by the IPC and World Triathlon on the allocation basis of gender equality and worldwide representation of athletes and NPCs.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 8 2024.

Triathlon debuted at the Paralympics in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

There are set to be three more medal events in triathlon at Paris 2024 than there were at Tokyo 2020.
