The 22-year-old from New Jersey reduced the mark of 51.46 she set in winning the Olympic title in Tokyo last year, having set her first world record of 51.90 on the same Eugene track during the Olympic trials.

Britton Wilson, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champion, was second in 53.08, with Shamier Little claiming the third qualifying place in 53.92.

The United States will also be represented by the Rio 2016 gold medallist Dalilah Muhammad, who has a wildcard entry as defending champion.

The women’s 100m hurdles final saw world record-holder Keni Harrison win in 12.34sec, the fastest time run this year, with Alaysha Johnson second in 12.35 and NCAA champion Alia Armstrong third at 12.47.

There was also a 2022 world lead in the men’s 400m, where Michael Norman won in 43.56 from Champion Allison, who clocked a personal best of 43.70, and NCAA champion Randolph Ross, who recorded 44.17.

Daniel Haugh won the men’s hammer throw with a best of 80.18 metres, with US record-holder Rudy Winkler second on 78.33m and Alex Young third on 76.60m.

Keturah Orji won the women’s triple jump with 14.79m to claim her sixth successive national title.

Tori Franklin was second on 14.59m ahead of Jasmine Moore on 14.15m.

Another NCAA champion, Talitha Diggs, won the women’s 400 metres in 50.22, from Kendall Ellis in 50.35 and Lynna Irby in 50.67.

Allyson Felix came sixth but is expected to be picked for the relays in her final season of competitive athletics.

Hillary Bor earned victory in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase in 8min 15.76sec and their was a popular second place for 33-year-old Rio 2016 silver medallist Evan Jager, who also ran under the World Championship standard with 8:17.29 after pulling clear over the final hurdle from Tokyo 2020 Olympian Bernard Keter, who was third in 8:19.16.

A devastating finish by Sinclaire Johnson saw her earn victory in the women’s 1500m in 4:03.29 from Cory McGee in 4:04.52 and world indoor 3,000m silver medallist Elle St. Pierre, who clocked 4:05.14.

Home favourite Cooper Teare won the men’s 1500m title in 3min 45.86sec.

Kara Winger secured victory in the women’s javelin with a final throw of 64.26m.

Meanwhile world champion and Olympic bronze medallist Noah Lyles clocked an easy-looking 19.95sec in his men’s 200m first-round race, with world 100m champion Christian Coleman winning his heat in 20.03 ahead of the previous day’s 100m winner, Fred Kerley, who clocked 20.29.

NCAA champion Abby Steiner, who tops this year’s world list in the women’s 200m, won her opener in 22.14.

Reigning world men’s 110m hurdles champion Grant Holloway and Devon Allen, who clocked 12.84, the third-fastest time ever, earlier this month, both won their opening heats with ease.

Tokyo 2020 and world silver medallist Rai Benjamin reached the men’s 400m hurdles final with victory in 47.93.
