Olympic champion Distria Krasniqi earned Kosovo a first gold medal of the Oran 2022 Mediterranean Games in the women's under-52 kilograms judo event.

Krasniqi overcame Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist and European under-23 champion Ana Viktorija Puljiz of Croatia in the final to retain a title she also won at Tarragona 2018.

Tokyo 2020 champion Krasniqi was not the only Kosovan judoka to collect a medal today as Flaka Loxha also eared under-57kg bronze.

Serbia's Marica Perišić came out on top in that division, with Italian Giulia Caggiano the runner-up.

Today's five judo champions represent five different countries, with Mélanie Vieu of France the third women's victor at under-48kg, beating Serbia's Milica Nikolić in the gold-medal match.

Four-time African champion Mohamed Abdelmawgoud from Egypt won men's under-66kg gold and Spaniard Francisco Garrigós retained his under-60kg crown.

Individual artistic gymnastics finals were also held in Algeria today, with Italy's women continuing to dominate.

Solo all-around champion Martina Maggio added balance beam and floor gold medals, with team-mates Giorgia Villa winning on the uneven bars and Asia D'Amato on the vault.

Men's all-around champion Adem Asil of Turkey added four more medals - vault gold, horizontal bar and rings silver, plus floor bronze.

Another of the day's intriguing storylines was San Marino picking up three boules medals - one of each colour, headlined by women's doubles gold via Stella Paoletti and Anna Maria Ciucci.
