An extra-time penalty from Ève Périsset helped France defeat holders Netherlands and reach the semi-finals of UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.

France, who had not previously reached the last four of a women’s European Championship, were dominant against the defending champions in Rotherham, England, and ensured there will be a new name on the trophy this time.

France had some good first-half chances to take the lead, with Delphine Cascarino hitting the post from range on the half-hour mark, and Melvine Malard seeing a shot blocked on the line by Stefanie van der Gragt.

Les Bleus continued to push for the breakthrough in the second half with Daphne van Domselaar producing a pair of impressive saves to tip away powerful headers from Wendy Renard.

In extra time, the sides were finally separated when France were awarded a penalty by use of the video assistant referee technology after Dominique Janssen had fouled Kadidatou Diani inside the box.

Despite van Domselaar guessing the right way, Périsset tucked the penalty kick into the corner of the net, and it proved enough for France to advance to the semi-finals, where they are due to face Germany.

Hosts England are set to meet Sweden in the other last four encounter, with these matches scheduled to be played on July 26 and 27.
