The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has designed the months of August and September as "Tokyo Parasports Month", celebrating last year's hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Various Para sports initiatives are to be rolled out during the period which the Games took place last year - from August 24 to September 5.

A concept movie has also been produced featuring Japanese Para athletes Mami Tani and Keiichi Kimura.

This movie shows highlights of the Paralympics, as well as the social changes brought in since the Games such as guard rails and tactile blocks on crossings for the visually-impaired.

It is to be released on digital signs at Tokyo Metropolitan facilities and is on the Government's YouTube channel.

Tani, who competed in triathlon at Tokyo 2020, says she could see the city evolve into a "barrier-free city" during the nine years since the Games were awarded to Japan.

"I see that Tokyo is now truly friendly to all," she said.

"Not only for people with disabilities, but for all including the elderly and parents with kids whilst we are living in an ageing society."

Kimura, who won the men's 100 metres butterfly S11 and silver in the men's 100m breaststroke S11, said that perspectives have changed too.

"We are much more frequently asked by people on the streets, 'Is everything alright? Can I help you?'," added Kimura.

"I think that the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games was not the end of the journey but it is the start for the new chapter.

"We, athletes, will work harder, so that this movement will be further promoted and will see stronger supports."
