Tributes have been paid to former National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) President and International Olympic Committee member (IOC) Patrick Chamunda during his burial service in Kitwe.

Chamunda, who died aged 77 earlier this month while receiving treatment in hospital in Johannesburg, was today buried at Nkana East Memorial Park.

During the burial service, current NOCZ President Alfred Foloko said Chamunda was "a man in his own league."

"He was a focused and inclusive man who was an exemplary promoter of the values and social responsibility of sport and whose voice carried weight on the African continent and beyond," said Foloko.

Chamunda served as NOCZ President from 1992 to 2005, and prior to that as treasurer from 1977 to 1981 and vice-president from 1981 to 1992.

He also served as Zambia’s Chef de Mission at the Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.

Chamunda served as an IOC member from 2002 to 2015 and was appointed an honorary IOC member from 2016 until his death.

Chamunda’s other sports administration roles included serving as President of the Confederation of Olympic Committees of Southern Africa from 1997 to 2005 and a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency Finance and Administration Committee from 2007 to 2015.

"Mr Chamunda will be remembered for his exemplary leadership style throughout the years in and out of the sports fraternity," Foloko added.

"His devotion to sports is evident from the wide range of initiatives which he developed, and we will never forget how instrumental he was in the setting up and implementation of the Sport for All project at Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) Zambia after the centre was officially opened in 2010, which has seen star athletes emerge from the foundation he laid.

"He has over the years played a key role in supporting the development of sports in Zambia and his expertise and knowledge in sports administration has seen him offer guidance to younger sports administrators on numerous occasions.

"We have lost a very humorous, humble, charismatic, and intelligent man. Mr Chamunda lived a life worth emulating and his numerous contributions to sports in this country will never be forgotten."

Foloko concluded the speech at the service by encouraging those present to celebrate his life and "remain grateful to him for his contribution to Olympism and to the development of sport in Zambia."

Among the sports leaders present were Global Esports Federation vice-president Tommy Sithole, Commonwealth Games Federation regional vice-president for Africa Miriam Moyo, and NOCZ representatives including vice-president Hazel Kennedy, treasurer Victor Banda and various Board members.
