Teams from the United States and Portugal won gold medals at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Championship Beach Volleyball at Praia de Pajuçara in Brazil.

Julia Scoles and Hailey Harward won the women's tournament for the US.

Harward and Scoles beat Spanish pair Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno 21-16, 21-10 in the final.

Puerto Rico's Maria Gonzales and Allanis Navas won the bronze medal at the expense of Germany.

University of Southern California alumna Harward and Scoles began the tournament seeded 28th and as the third American pair.

Portugal's João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos overcame Emmanuel Zürcher and Jonathan Jordan from Switzerland in a back-and-forth men's final.

It finished 21-17, 16-21, 15-13 in favour of the Portuguese players.

There was a bronze medal for Germany in the men's contest.

Maximilian Just and Lui Wüst saw off Spanish rivals in three sets to complete the podium.

A total of 122 athletes representing 23 countries took part in the FISU World University Championship Beach Volleyball.
