Dutch Boxing Federation President Boris van der Vorst has hit out at the "absurd and dishonest nature" of the current International Boxing Association (IBA) regime following its recent Board meeting.

Van der Vorst described IBA’s declaration of former President CK Wu "persona non grata" as a desperate attempt to "divert responsibility" from the current crisis facing the sport, including a possible exclusion from the Olympic Games.

According to an independent investigation, Wu, who served as President from 2006 to 2017, was responsible for tension between the IBA, known as AIBA back then, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

"Declaring Dr. Ching Kuo Wu persona non grata and presenting it as the main finding of the McLaren investigations into AIBA/IBA is simply cynical," van der Vorst said in a statement.

"Despite the negative contribution of former President Wu to the crisis in our sport, he has not been involved in any boxing matters since his resignation in 2017.

"That was five years ago."

The Dutch official also accused current IBA President Umar Kremlev of failing to "meet the expectations" after the International Olympic Committee had provided the International Federation with a roadmap for reforms.

Van der Vorst also expressed concerns about the integrity of many IBA events in the past two years, including the 2022 Men’s Euopean Boxing Championships in Yerevan.

The Dutch official claimed that Kremlev and the current regime ignored Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren’s findings on certain competition officials.

"The IOC continues to communicate its grave concerns, including those related to competition integrity, but they are met with indifference and even hostility from IBA," van der Vorst continued.

"Earlier this year, a Russian speaking individual identified by McLaren as a 'high‐risk official for corruption' was placed in charge of all boxing technical officials in Europe.

"Since then, he has overseen appointments of officials to all IBA sanctioned and affiliated events in the region.

"Among other IBA competitions over the past two years, the 2022 Men’s European Boxing Championships that took place in Yerevan, Armenia, was subject to controversies related to the management of competition officials.

"McLaren investigated this Championships and produced a delayed report for the IBA Board on October 6, 2022.

"As of now, this report has not reached the Board Directors, let alone National Federations.

"In 2022, we have also seen a number of implicated 'high‐risk' competition officials return to officiating at IBA events, despite a clear McLaren report recommendation not to appoint them.

"Contrary to the claims of the IBA leadership, processes related to competition appointments and Field of Play management of ITOs and R&Js remain compromised and without any responsible 'follow up'."

Van der Vorst also questioned why Kremlev has decided to stick with the same chief financial officer who served Wu and Gafur Rakhimov, despite the McLaren Independent Investigation Team finding violations of financial and organisational management and sporting integrity had taken place during the duo’s time.

"It is IBA that is failing the boxers around the world, not the IOC. It is CK Wu, Gafur Rakhimov, all the AIBA Interim Presidents and, certainly, Umar Kremlev, who have disregarded the Olympic Dream of millions of boxers for years in pursuit of different agendas."

Boxing has been left off from the initial programme of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

But Kremlev said "nobody will be silent" if the sport is not reinstated and the decision to exclude boxing from future editions of the Olympic Games will not be taken lightly.

The IOC conducted the boxing events at the postponed Tokyo Olympics last year.

With the IOC set to oversee the hosting of boxing events at Paris 2024, van der Vorst has called on National Federations to maintain "close contact with your National Olympic Committees" to ensure boxers and coaches "stay well informed".

"We need to speak the truth to our members and avoid any deliberate misinformation regarding the Olympic Qualification pathway.

"We should express gratitude to the IOC for keeping the sport on the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Programs.

"Together, we must work to uphold the Olympic Movement Values, comply with the Olympic Charter, meet the IOC criteria for our sport, and ensure an Olympic future for boxing, with or without the IBA."

Russian official Kremlev was re-elected as IBA President in May in Istanbul after van der Vorst had been declared ineligible to stand on the eve of the election.

The Dutch official then successfully appealed against the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit's decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

However, Kremlev cemented his position during an Extraordinary Congress in Yerevan in September after almost three-quarters of voting delegates opted against holding a fresh election.

Since re-election, Kremlev and IBA decided to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under their own flags, despite the continued invasion of Ukaraine.

The decision was also against the recommendations of the IOC.
