West Midlands Police has ended its investigation into athletes who absconded from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, saying all were either found or are no longer considered missing.

At least 17 participants were reported missing during the Commonwealth Games, of which 13 were athletes, with nine individuals found by officials by the end of August.

There has been no update on the other eight people, but West Midlands Police now considers the matter closed.

"We don't have any current missing people investigations," West Midlands Police said.

"Those reported missing were either found, or the investigation closed because they were no longer believed to be missing."

The majority of those missing were from Sri Lanka, which has been experiencing economic and political turmoil.

Sri Lanka's team were asked to hand over their passports at one stage of Birmingham 2022, to stop more members trying to flee and settle in England, but officials were advised such an order was unlawful.

Five of the 10 Sri Lankan team members who had disappeared were still reported missing in late August.

Pakistani boxers were also reported missing, as well as competitors or officials from Ghana, Cameroon and Botswana.

Athletes going missing is a recurring theme of the Commonwealth Games.

Some 255 athletes and officials who travelled to Australia on special Commonwealth Games visas for Gold Coast 2018 remained in the country after they expired, with many seeking asylum.
