The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has conditionally approved to host some of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games' basketball competitions away from the capital in Lille.

Lille's Stade Pierre-Mauroy is set to host the group games of the men's and women's events but the final phase is scheduled to take place in the Bercy Arena in Paris.

"Regarding the group phase, the Central Board has acknowledged the extraordinary reasons invoked by Paris 2024 and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the hosting of the games in Lille," read a FIBA statement.

"Considering the proximity of the Games and the significant joint efforts by all parties and their experts, it has been exceptionally decided to conditionally approve such venue, pending confirmation that the FIBA requirements are met, notably those relating to the health and safety of the players and the associated risks.

"The Central Board also approved the bidding process and conditions for the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments due to take place from August 12 to 20 2023."

Stade Pierre-Mauroy’s history of hosting major international competitions was cited by Paris 2024 as the chief reason for the proposed move as it has previously staged the EuroBasket final in 2015 which set a record attendance for a basketball match in Europe of 27,372 spectators.

The stadium is also included in the Organising Committee's plan for the handball competitions.

The venue is set to host the finals after the preliminary rounds are contested at Hall Six of the Parc des Expositions at Porte Versailles.

A decision is now awaited by the IOC to confirm the plan for the Stade Pierre-Mauroy which is located more than 130 miles north of Paris.

The basketball competitions at Paris 2024 are set to take place from July 27 to August 11 with the United States due to defend their titles in both tournaments.
