The sport was originally to have been staged at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago.

"It is a fantastic venue, it has a greater capacity and is easily accessible to more people given the location in the capital," Organising Committee chairman Ephraim Serrette explained as the change was announced. 

"This will mean more of the local community will come and enjoy the Games."

The venue is named after Hasely Crawford, who became Trinidad and Tobago's first Olympic champion when he won 100 metres gold at the 1976 Montreal Games. 

Originally opened in 1982, the venue has a capacity of 23,000.

The Games, to be known as Trinbago 2023, is to feature seven sports.

Trinidad will also host cycling, swimming and diving at a multi-sport complex in Couva, some 35 kilometres from Port of Spain.

Rugby sevens, fast5 netball, beach volleyball and triathlon are all scheduled to take place in Tobago.

Meanwhile Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee President Diane Henderson has encourage youngsters between the ages of six and 17 to submit their designs for the Games mascot before the competition deadline on January 1.

"The mascot is always an important part of any games and will generate excitement among young people across the Commonwealth and some adults," Henderson said.

"As you all know what a mascot represents, that iconic figure or feature that is used to market any games. 

"It will also represent TT and its culture and heritage. 

"This is what we are hoping to get out of the competition and the engagement of youth will be brought to the games."

Trinbago 2023 is expected to attract around 1,000 competitors from 72 countries.

Originally scheduled for 2021, the event is now expected to open on August 4 2023.
