Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh is set to host the world’s best taekwondo athletes for the last time this year as it gets ready to host the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Finals starting tomorrow.

The Grand Prix event being hosted in the Gulf nation for the first time will see a total of 128 athletes from 40 take part apart from a refugee team.

Among men, Vito Dell'Aquila of Italy will be looking to end the season on a high after winning gold in the Guadalajara 2022 World Championships, that concluded recently.

The Olympic champion in the men’s 58 kilograms category will be up against Jang Jun of South Korea, who he defeated for the world title in Mexico.

Top seed and African champion Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi of Tunisia, who lost against Dell'Aquila in the Tokyo 2020 final, will be looking for the top prize after three second place finishes in as many Grand Prix events this year.

Hungarian Omar Salim will be the one to look out for in the men’s 54 kg after winning world and European titles this year.

It will also be interesting to see how Spaniard Daniel Quesada Barrera, who won a 74kg world title in Mexico, steps up in 80kg category in Riyadh.

The women's field will also see some exciting battles with Olympic champion Panipak Wongpattanakit tipped to face Mexican world champion Daniela Paola Souza Naranjo in the under-49kg.

After winning the Paris and Manchester Grand Prix events, Thai native Wongpattanakit will be hoping to seal gold in the Finals.

Women’s 57 kg world champion Zongshi Luo of China won gold in Rome, Paris and Manchester this year and is most likely to succeed in Riyadh.

Lightweight junior and senior world champion Sarah Chaari of Belgium will also be strong contended in Saudi Arabia.

The event will also see the World Taekwondo Gala Awards being held on Saturday (December 10).
