Tokyo 2020 Paralympic wheelchair gold medallist Jorge Sanchez and 2011 world 110 metres hurdles champion Jason Richardson have joined young people from Los Angeles at a Youth Council on "Education and Inclusion around Paralympic sports".

The council was established in 2021 by the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Organising Committee (LA28) "to design a Games we all want to be part of", but this was the first time that all the group had met face to face.

Participants aged 18 to 24 were nominated by community based organisations from across the greater Los Angeles area.

"This diverse group represents a variety of LA neighbourhoods and communities who come together to share their ideas around topics critic to hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games," organisers claimed.

The meeting included a wheelchair basketball clinic held in the John Wooden Center at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

"The wheelchair event showed me the elite level of competition required of Paralympic athletes," admitted Richardson, who followed his world championship gold in 2011 with Olympic silver in 2012.

"I was outpaced, outscored and outmanoeuvred but I had an incredible time learning the fundamentals of the Game and deepening my understanding and appreciation for adaptive athletes," Richardson added.

"I also valued the opportunity to learn from LA 28's Youth Council whose insights are helping us to grow into a better organisation."

The clinic, organised by UCLA's Adaptive Recreation department, is expected to be a weekly event held every Tuesday.
