Kayak cross and canoe and kayak sprint races are set to be given their own exclusive competition windows on the Sunday of every event during the qualification process for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The former is set to make its Olympic debut in France and is now set to be the only event held on the Sunday of International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Cups and World Championships.

The 5,000 metres sprint races will also be the focus of events it features in after superior viewing figures underlined the popularity of longer races.

"In 2023 the main focus for most of our elite athletes will centre around qualification for Paris, so we have designed an event schedule to maximise exposure for these outstanding competitors," said ICF Canoe Sprint Committee chair Toshi Foruya.

"We are also looking to build on the strong following we have for the 5,000 metre races.

"We really want to build up this event to show how attractive it could be on the Olympic programme."

The ICF has also scheduled Friday afternoon finals for several canoe sprint, Paracanoe, and canoe slalom competitions.

This has been done in a bid to give athletes more opportunity to prepare for events and to provide new windows for television and online viewers.

"Friday finals will hopefully relieve some of the stress for athletes who now compete in three events - kayak, canoe, and kayak cross," said ICF Canoe Slalom Committee chair Jean-Michel Prono.

"And by making kayak cross the sole event on Sunday, we are showcasing this exciting event ahead of its Olympic debut in 2024.

"We are confident sport fans who have not already discovered this sport, will quickly fall in love with what we offer."

Canoe and kayak slalom events are set to take place from July 27 to August 5 before the sprint events from August 6 to 10 at Paris 2024.

Paracanoe is then scheduled for September 6 to 8.

All of them are set to take place at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
