Brisbane held the first Virtus Regional Games from November 5 to 11, welcoming more than 600 athletes and officials to the event for intellectually-impaired athletes.

Australia won 94 gold medals at the Games, finishing far ahead of Japan and Hong Kong on the medals table.

The hosts won more titles than the rest of the countries and territories combined.

"The event is an important platform for elite athletes in our region with an intellectual impairment," said the Australian Government in a statement.

"It allowed participating athletes the same opportunity to compete on the world stage as athletes without disability and showcase their dedication, perseverance and sporting talent.

"The Australian Government is proud to have supported the Virtus Oceania Asia Games 2022 and congratulates all athletes on their achievements."

Solomon Islands, Fiji, Palau and the Maldives competed in a Virtus event for the first time when they participated at the Games.

The Virtus Global Games, previously known as the International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (INAS) Global Games, has had five editions to date with the last one taking place in Brisbane too in 2019.

The sixth edition is scheduled to take place in Vichy in France.
