A baseball5 development project by the Zambia Baseball Softball Association (ZABSA) has been approved by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC).

The project is funded by Olympic Solidarity and is part of the development of the national sports system throughout the nation.

WBSC instructor Andrea D’Auria oversaw the educational phase of the project earlier this month, which saw him visit the provinces of Chipata, Kabwe, Kitwe, Choma, Livingstone and capital Lusaka.

The second phase in January is due to see 18 selected teachers take part in a five-day training course covering coaching, the role of game officials and game operations.

Following this phase of the project each province will form Coaching, Umpiring, Scoring and Game Operations Commissions.

The third phase is due to start with local competition on February 1 and will run through to the end of March.

Following this phase two teams per province are set to qualify for the Zambia Baseball5 National Championship, due to be held in April 2023.

The sport of baseball5 was introduced to the Southern African nation in February 2019.

Zambia participated in the inaugural Baseball5 African Championship earlier this year, and were eliminated in the round-robin stages.
