Malaysian badminton players Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai, who won mixed doubles silver together at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, have announced their engagement.

Goh, who is 32, proposed to Lai, who is three years younger, on holiday in the Maldives.

The pair had announced their relationship in Bali in 2021.

They are currently ranked eighth in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) world rankings.

Goh won silver with Malaysia at the Thomas Cup in 2014, and bronze two years later.

He has also won a men's team bronze at the Asian Games in Incheon in 2014.

The pair have won two silver medals together in the mixed doubles at the Southeast Asian Games in 2017 and 2019, and were beaten finalists at last year's BWF World Tour Finals.

Lai shared the news of their engagement on Instagram.

"You’ve been planning this for almost a year you said, finding the perfect place, perfect ring, perfect timing, perfect moment," she wrote.

"From learning all about diamonds to arranging the entire proposal trip, you had to do it all by ur (sic) own what more having to keep it from me.

"Despite having to face numerous obstacles along the way, flight cancellations, complete change of resort, customising the ring and box, change of schedules, still, u (sic) made sure everything was perfect up to the tiniest details.

"I am indeed one very blessed girl.

"To my dear fiancé, you have made the most beautiful proposal I can ever dream of come true."

Goh and Lai are next set to compete at their home event in the Malaysia Open later this month.
