Gold Coast City Mayor Tom Tate has called for his city to become primary host of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games instead of Brisbane, in order prevent spiralling costs.

With an International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegation due to visit the Gold Coast in March to view potential venues for the Games events - between six and nine - currently scheduled for the 2018 Commonwealth Games host city, Tate has pitched for a bigger share of the action, Australian newspaper The Courier-Mail reported.

He highlighted the planned redevelopment of Brisbane’s Gabba cricket ground, where the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and athletics programme are due to take place, which was originally priced at AUD$1 billion (£556 million/$638 million/€646 million) but is now likely to top AUD$2.5 billion (£1.4 billion/$1.6 billion/€1.6 billion).

"Look at the Gabba," Tate told The Courier-Mail.

"They want to spend $2.5 billion to put an extra 8,000 seats in.

"That simply doesn’t make sense when you cannot deliver affordable housing.

"They should only refurbish it because this is taxpayers’ money and there are hard times right now so it’s not the time to rebuild.

"If you are going to burn dollars left, right and centre, people will look at you with disdain.”

The Mayor claimed the regional Games - being co-hosted by the Gold Coast, are too Brisbane-centric and that organisers could better fulfil new IOC hosting requirements by allowing more events to be held on the Gold Coast.

"I say they need to be respectful of taxpayers’ money," Tate added.

"We already have a lot of the facilities such as Olympic pools, hockey fields and BMX, to name a few.

"Let’s focus on value-for-money and legacy for the whole of South East Queensland.

"After all, this all started out as a Southeast Queensland [Olympic and Paralympic] bid.’’

Gold Coast City Deputy Mayor Donna Gates claimed there was no "Brisbane versus Gold Coast versus Sunshine Coast battle-for-supremacy" but insisted the city could do more.

"We want to work collaboratively in the region so we can deliver the best possible Olympic Games in 2032," she told The Courier-Mail.

"What the community would like to see is long-term benefits and the most important thing in our region in transport infrastructure.

"They would rather see $2.5 billion spent on those initiatives than on the Gabba."

The Australian Government warned in November that it could not guarantee 50-50 funding with Queensland, and the potential cost of the Gabba revamp has prompted speculation that some of the athletics competition may be moved to Carrara Stadium, which hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, plus athletics, at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Queensland's Deputy Premier Steven Miles defended the Olympic plans and cost of the Gabba revamp, promising the Games would "deliver benefits across the State".

He added, "It will also attract national and international entertainment events."

In addition to staging beach volleyball, judo, wrestling, triathlon, marathon swimming and volleyball during the Olympics, the Gold Coast Athlete Village will house more than 2,600 athletes and officials.

There are currently due to be 19 competition venues hosting sports in Brisbane.

Tate’s comments are the latest salvo in tensions between the Mayor and Games organisers after the city missed out on a seat on the Brisbane 2032 Board.

Initially the Gold Coast was expected to host up to nine events, including race walks and the marathon, basketball and football preliminary finals, handball and golf.

However the golf, among other sports, will now be played in Brisbane.
