The first medals of the 2023 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Winter World University Games here are set to be won tomorrow in four different sports.

In total, seven golds are availableon day one of competition in the New York village with cross-country skiing athletes set to take to the podium first.

The mixed team sprint discipline is first up with the semi-finals and finals scheduled to take place at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

The field has been blown wide open with the ban of Russian athletes from the Games as a result of the war in Ukraine.

In the last edition, Krasnoyarsk 2019, the host nation dominated cross-country skiing.

They secured nine golds, eight silvers, and eight bronzes from the 11 events.

Alexander Terentev and Hristina Matsokina led a Russian one-two last time out ahead of Andrey Sobakarev and Polina Nekrasova.

A total of 18 countries are registered to take part in the sprint semi-finals and are set to nominate one man and one woman to represent them from 9am to 10:30am local time.

An hour north of the cross-country venue, Alpine skiing will be taking place at Whiteface Mountain as men's and women's super-G podium places are on offer.

Whiteface Mountain staged events at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games and with the greatest vertical drop, 4,340 feet, of any lift-serviced mountain in the Northeast it poses a fierce challenge for skiers.

Canada's Mika Anne Reha and Japan's Rion Takeuchi are the pre-event favourites as their 898.52 and 391.62 International Ski and Snowboard Federation points are the most out the women's and men's competitors.

Gore Mountain sets the stage for the snowboard cross finals.

France are highly tipped to perform in the men's event after they achieved the top three places in today's seeding round.

Quentin Sodogas, Titouan Cottret, and Guillaume Herpin set blistering times of 54.83sec, 55.10, and 55.27, respectively.

Meanwhile, Nienke Elsibaeth Hendrika Poll of The Netherlands has set the pace in the women's event with 58.80 on the clock.

Switzerland's Sophie Hediger and Frenhwoman Anna Rose Valentin then follow close behind on 59.76 and 1:00.22.

They will have to get through a round robin stage before the finals take place in the afternoon.

The day's action is then due come to an end with Nordic combined, one of three optional sports added to the Lake Placid 2023 programme alongside speed skating and ski jumping.

Gundersen's are scheduled with a 5km race for women and 10km for men.

Mount Van Hoevenberg will host the cross-country element of it after the ski jump portion at the nearby Olympic Jumping Centre.
