They beat the men’s cricket team and women’s rugby team from their neighbours Jersey and St Martin’s Football Club from Guernsey to lift the award.

The Ceremony was held at the Royal Jersey Showground.

Guernsey had sent a team of 28 to the Birmingham Games. 

They competed in seven sports and won their first Commonwealth Games medals since Adrian Breton and Graham Le Maitre had taken pairs rapid fire pistol bronze at Victoria 1994.

Their first medal at Birmingham 2022 came from Lucy Beere, the silver medallist in the women’s bowls held at Leamington Spa.

In the final, she had held a 10-2 advantage by the eighth end against Australia’s Ellen Ryan, but eventually lost 21-17.

"It is probably going to be hard to top, it was everything you could possibly dream of," Beere told Channel Islands ITV

"To just look out into the crowds, the Guernsey flags, there were just so many of them,"

Later, in the 400 metres hurdles, Alastair Chalmers, 2017 Commonwealth Games Youth champion, became Guernsey’s first athletics medallist at a Commonwealth Games.

Earlier in the year, Chalmers had won the British title and also reached the semi finals at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene.

Then he contracted COVID-19 and faced a race to be fit for Birmingham.

At Birmingham 2022, Chalmers took the bronze medal behind defending champion Kyran McMaster of the British Virgin Islands and Jamaica’s Jaheel Hyde.

“Twenty twenty two was probably the best year of my life,” Chalmers told Channel Islands ITV.

"I still watch the race back and always have a smile on my face, it will be with me for the rest of my life.

His performances also earned him a nomination for the individual Channel Islands Sports Personality but he lost out to Guernsey football Maya Le Tissier, who plays for Manchester United and England.

Guernsey’s Games Chef De Mission Angela Stuart posted her congratulations on social media.

"As your Chef de Mission, I am so proud to have been part of this fantastic team, athletes, sport managers, medical team, and coaches, we could have not done this without you," she wrote.

Guernsey have competed at the Commonwealth Games since Edinburgh 1970.

The island known as a "Bailiwick", is also set to stage the Island Games for the third time in 2023 after previously hosting in 1987 and 2003. 

The Island Games had originally been scheduled for 2021, but were postponed as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The date set for the Opening Ceremony is now due to be July 8.
