Double Olympic curler Lisa Weagle has been named Canadian Chef de Mission for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea.

"I am really excited to meet all the athletes, this is going to be such an incredible experience for them, for the first time to be part of the Olympic Movement to represent their country wearing the maple leaf," Weagle told insidethegames.

She is expecting Canada’s team to number 85 to 94 competitors which would make it the country's largest at a Youth Olympic Games.

"For these athletes it is really a bit of a stepping stone and a pathway to future Olympics, the biggest thing I want to impart to them is to really enjoy the moment and that your Youth Olympics can be more than the results and where you finish on the podium," Weagle said.

"Being able to set other goals for yourself, to be a good team mate, to get to know people, to have fun and to make the most of your experience regardless of the result."

Weagle revealed she has also sought the advice of Catriona Le May Doan, who was Chef de Mission for Canada at Beijing 2022.

"This is my first time being Chef so it is going to be all new to me but I’ve talked to Catriona and she has provided me some advice," Weagle added.

"Figuring out what my role is and how I can make an impact is what I’ll be spending the next little while thinking about and making a plan for that."

Weagle won World Championship curling gold in 2017 and made her own Olympic debut at the Pyeongchang 2018 Games in Korea.

"To be going back to the place where I had my first Olympic Games just feels like a really neat full circle moment," Weagle continued.

She was part of the coaching team for Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman at the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Championships, and for Olympic gold medallist Kaitlyn Lawes at the national women's championship last week.

"We are thrilled to have Lisa lead this Gangwon 2024 Youth Olympic Team," Canadian Olympic Committee chief sport officer Eric Myles said.

"She embodies our Team Canada values of accountability, bravery, excellence, fun, and respect and is a wonderful role model for these young athletes, the next generation of Team Canada."
