Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Delicious Orie of England has decided to install his Golden Gateway plaque at Aston University, his alma-mater.

Orie graduated from Aston University with an economics and management degree last year.

He achieved his gold medal in the super-heavyweight category in boxing at Birmingham 2022.

The boxer's plaque was installed at the Woodcock Sports Centre at the university.

"Aston University’s Woodcock Sports Centre means a lot to me," said Orie.

"The venue provided all the facilities that I needed to allow me to become a Commonwealth Games champion.

"It’s very motivational knowing that I’ve actually got here and achieved it.

"It was always the plan from the beginning."

The 25-year-old started his boxing career at the age of 18, with London 2012 champion Anthony Joshua being his inspiration.

Born in Russia, Orie moved to Wolverhampton, England at the age of seven.

Mark Smith, the executive director of business and regional engagement at Aston University, expressed his pleasure that an alumni became a successful athlete.

"Naturally we are very proud of our alumni Delicious for both his academic and sporting achievements whilst at Aston University," said Smith.

"The whole University team is thrilled that he has chosen our Woodcock Sports Centre as the permanent location for this wonderful accolade.

"It will be a constant reminder to all of what can be achieved with dedication, hard work and focus.

"Delicious is a fantastic ambassador for the University, and we cannot thank him enough for his generosity of spirit, giving many hours of personal time has been to inspire current and future students."
