The line-up for the team sports events have been unveiled for this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced that 44 teams representing 23 nations will compete across beach volleyball, Fast5 netball and rugby sevens at Trinbago 2023.

"Entry for team sports was by invitation and the demand for places was once again high," a statement from the CGF read.

"Following applications by Commonwealth Games Associations [CGA], the CGF, in full consultation with the respective International Federations, made the final selection based on criteria including host nation representation, past results, depth of field and strength of competition, and regional representation."

Hosts Trinidad and Tobago will be among eight nations taking part in Fast5 netball, which is set to make its Commonwealth Youth Games debut.

Australia, England, South Africa, Botswana, Canada, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Scotland have also been confirmed as participating countries in the event, due to be held from August 5 to 10 at the Shaw Park Cultural Complex.

England will be aiming to defend their men’s beach volleyball title when the event takes place in Tobago.

The 12-strong field also features Gambia, Canada, Sri Lanka, St Kitts and Nevis, Australia, Cyprus, New Zealand, Rwanda, St Lucia and South Africa.

The women’s beach volleyball competition will see Australia look to come out on top again.

The defending champions will come up against the likes of Rwanda, Canada, Mozambique, Cayman Islands, England, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Scotland, Kenya and Bermuda.

Both beach volleyball events are set to be staged from August 5 to 10 at the Pigeon Point Beach.

With title holders England and silver medallists Samoa not competing in the men’s rugby sevens competition, Fiji will be aiming to seize their opportunity.

The Fijian team claimed bronze at Bahamas 2017 and will be among the favourites to take the title in Tobago.

Hosts Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Jamaica, Scotland and South Africa are also in the field.

Australia will be hoping to retain their women’s rugby sevens crown but will face competition from Canada, Wales, Fiji and Kenya.

All rugby sevens matches are scheduled to be held from August 6 to 8 at the Shaw Park Cultural recreational field.

"We are thrilled to unveil the nations competing in the team sports at Trinbago 2023," said CGF President Dame Louise Martin.

"The beach volleyball, Fast5 netball and rugby sevens competitions are set to be highly competitive, with nations from across the Commonwealth vying for gold.

"It will be an unforgettable, inspiring experience for the young athletes involved and an opportunity for fans to see the stars of the future.

"We are particularly excited to announce the teams playing in the first-ever Fast5 netball competition.

"The dynamic and innovative format promises to be one of the highlights of the Games."
